Crunchyroll Unveils Hand-Drawn Anime Adaptation ‘Sekiro: No Defeat’ at Gamescom 2025

A Bold Anime Adaptation of a Gaming Classic

At Gamescom 2025’s Opening Night Live, Crunchyroll officially revealed Sekiro: No Defeat, a fully hand-drawn anime inspired by FromSoftware Inc.’s acclaimed title Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. The announcement marks a major leap for the franchise, translating its intense action and deep storytelling into a cinematic anime format.

Reimagining the Sengoku Era

The adaptation stays faithful to the game’s central themes of loyalty, vengeance, and supernatural forces while reimagining Sengoku-era Japan through a sweeping, visual-first approach. Each frame is designed to capture the intensity of the original game, bringing its battle-driven narrative into a new artistic medium.

Creative Team Behind the Project

The series is helmed by Kenichi Kutsuna, whose animation work has defined classics like Naruto: Shippuden, Bleach, and Satoshi Kon’s Paranoia Agent. Screenwriter Takuya Satou (Fate/stay night) and character designer Takahiro Kishida (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind) join him, supported by a veteran animation team. This lineup promises a faithful yet cinematic reimagining of the source material.

Release and Streaming Plans

Produced by Kadokawa, Qzil.la, and ARCH, Sekiro: No Defeat is set to premiere on Crunchyroll in 2026. The platform will hold exclusive streaming rights across all territories except Japan, China, Korea, Russia, and Belarus. For fans of both anime and gaming, this project represents one of the most anticipated crossovers in recent years.
