Independent Japanese watchmaker Kurono Tokyo has unveiled its latest creation, the Vermilion Chronograph “Shu.” Following the success of the Jubilee Sensu EOL “Shiraai,” released earlier this year to honor founder Hajime Asaoka’s 60th birthday, the brand now introduces a striking new timepiece defined by cultural symbolism and bold design.

The Meaning Behind “Shu”

The standout feature of the chronograph is its vivid orange-red dial, inspired by the Japanese character “朱” (shu). Historically, the shade has represented nobility, protection, and good fortune. It echoes through Japanese heritage, seen in Shinto shrine torii gates, samurai armor, and traditional urushi lacquerware. Asaoka and his team conducted extensive ultraviolet exposure testing — equivalent to more than ten years of real-world use — to ensure the hue remains vibrant over time. Only selenium red and vermilion pigments met their demanding fade-resistance criteria, guaranteeing longevity in both color and character.

Design and Craftsmanship

Encased in a sleek 38mm case, the Vermilion Chronograph “Shu” balances elegance with functionality. Black subdials and tachymeter scales provide strong visual contrast, enhancing readability without detracting from the vibrant dial. The combination of refined proportions and cultural storytelling makes the timepiece a distinctive entry in Kurono Tokyo’s portfolio.

Availability

Produced in limited numbers, the Vermilion Chronograph “Shu” will be available exclusively through Kurono Tokyo’s physical salons. Sales begin August 22, with a retail price of ¥598,950 JPY (approx. $4,058 USD). Collectors and enthusiasts alike are expected to move quickly for this release, which continues Asaoka’s tradition of merging technical mastery with cultural resonance.
